Perovskia atriplicifolia
- Russian sage. Most common selections are believed to be of mixed genetic origin, likely P. atriplicifolia x P. abrotanoides hybrids. To 48". Aromatic subshrub which, though above-ground wood may overwinter in many areas, performs best when cut to within 6" of the ground every Spring. Finely incised gray green foliage gives rise in late summer to many-branched violet blue spikes of small flowers which appear smoky from a distance, expecially when planted en masse. Does not tolerate any shade whatsoever, and performs best in ordinary well-drained soil. May spread slowly by stolons. A commercial landscaping favorite.
